“I can’t believe I let you talk me into this.”
Alessandra’s head whipped toward Lane, who was sitting beside her in the passenger’s seat and staring out the window with a look of horror as they pulled into the lot. “Have you been painting your house with the windows closed again because you must be high. You were the one who talked me into going. If you didn’t tell me how fun it was, I would never have agreed to do it.”
“Please.” Lane’s focus shifted to Alessandra as she found a parking space. “You actually believed I’ve been zip-lining? You know I don’t even like to look over the railing at the mall. What the hell would I want to be up in some Treetop of Terror for?”
“I don’t know,” Alessandra said as they exited the car. “You’re the one who said we should go when Jace suggested it.”
“No. I said you should go.” She pointed at Alessandra over the roof of her white hybrid and slung her backpack over her shoulder. “But you were scared, and you didn’t want to go on your own, and then I found out there’d be other professional football players there . . .,” she said, her voice fading out as she spoke.
Alessandra laughed. “Ahh, so now we get to the bottom of the real reason for your presence.”
“Judge all you want, but I’m just trying to play fair,” she said casually. “There’ll be a shit ton of guys here, and I wouldn’t wanna miss the opportunity for one of them to ask me out.” She turned toward Alessandra as they walked up the path to the entrance. “It wouldn’t be fair for you to live up to your end of the deal if I don’t live up to mine.”
Alessandra turned to look at her. “Your selflessness is inspiring.”
“Aly.” Jace’s voice drew Alessandra’s focus away from Lane as he jogged toward them from a nearby path. “You made it.” He gave her an excited kiss on the cheek.
She didn’t respond, her thoughts too fixated on the way Jace’s white sleeveless Under Armour shirt clung to his chest and abs. There was a glean of sweat on him already, causing his biceps to nearly shimmer in the sunlight. “Wouldn’t miss it,” she finally said with a smile.
Jace’s gaze flitted over to Lane, who looked like she’d just seen a superhero. “Jace Benning,” he said, his hand reaching out to take Lane’s.
“Sorry,” Alessandra said, realizing that she should probably introduce them. “This is my friend Lane. Lane, this is Jace.”
Lane’s lips formed one of those wide toothy grins as she accepted Jace’s hand. “Nice to finally meet you. I’ve heard a lot about you,” she said, somehow managing to speak through her smile. “Of course most of that is from public news sources. Aly here,” Lane said with an added emphasis on Jace’s nickname for her, “hasn’t actually told me much about you.” She looked at Alessandra, her lips still frozen in a gigantic grin. “But we will definitely rectify that now,” she added.
